Solar Battery Rebates and Incentives in Australia
Reduce the upfront cost of an eligible solar battery.
The Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides upfront support for eligible battery-storage systems installed with rooftop solar.
The program is available to qualifying households, businesses and community organisations.

How the Federal Battery Discount Works
Rather than requiring customers to lodge a conventional cash-rebate claim after installation, eligible battery systems create Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs).
The value of those certificates contributes to an upfront discount on the battery installation.
The Australian Government currently describes the support as being around 30% of the upfront cost for eligible systems, although the actual discount varies and is designed to reduce over time.
Eligible Battery Sizes
Under the rules effective from 1 May 2026:
- The battery system must generally have between 5 kWh and 100 kWh nominal capacity
- STCs are available for the first 50 kWh of new usable capacity
- Eligible systems can be installed at residential or non-residential premises
- Batteries can be on-grid or off-grid
- Stackable systems may qualify if they satisfy the program requirements

Solar Is Required
The battery must be installed with either an existing eligible solar PV system or a new solar PV system installed at the same time.
A standalone battery charged only from the electricity grid does not qualify under the current federal program.
Approved Products and Accredited Installation
Eligible battery systems and applicable inverters must satisfy Clean Energy Council product requirements.
Installation must be undertaken by, or under onsite supervision of, an appropriately Solar Accreditation Australia-accredited battery installer, along with applicable state electrical licensing requirements.
VPP Capability
On-grid battery systems must have the technical capability to participate in a Virtual Power Plant under the federal program, although customers are not required to actually join a VPP.
